Writers Retreat #2 Was a Success!
Our second Writer's retreat this weekend was a great time!
Led by Dr. Esprit, the online and in-person participants explored genres of non-fiction writing at sessions on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They discussed the differences between autobiographical works, biographies, memoirs, personal essays, and critical/thematic essays.
Exercises were designed to guide the participants on topics that were deeply important to them. Participants left with an early outline of a personal essay that they were excited to keep developing. They will be able to share their writing on Create Caribbean's online platform for writers: https://createcaribbean.org/cwr/
Stay tuned to join us for our Writer’s Retreat in July 2023!
Independence Season Begins!
Dominica National Pride and Heritage month has begun! This creole season, the country will be celebrating its 44th year of independence under the theme ‘One Dominica, One People, One Vision.’
The Creole Season runs from October 1st to November 5th with Creole Day on the 28th of October and Independence Day on the 3rd of November.
This independence season, we pay close attention to our heritage and history, as well as the people who have made their mark on Dominica’s history. Today we feature Mrs. Phyllis Shand Allfrey.
Born in Roseau, Dominica in October 1907, she was a West Indian writer, teacher, politician, and editor. She died on February 4th, 1986 at the age of 79 in Dominica. She spent her youth overseas. While in England, she found interest in politics, and soon after joined the British Labour Party and began her literary career. After a few years, she moved back to Dominica where she aimed to help the citizens by addressing the socialist struggle they faced. She believed strongly in the rights of the people and as a result, she founded the Dominica Labour Party in 1955 alongside Emmanuel C Loblack and Edward O Leblanc who shared her views and passion for the colony’s welfare.
She edited the Dominica Herald from 1963 until 1965 as well as wrote and published for the Dominica Star from 1965 to 1982. In 1968 Allfrey was one of the founders of The Dominica Freedom Party. Allfrey served as Minister of Labour and Social Affairs in the Government of Sir Grantley Adams. Additionally, in the New Federation, Phyllis Shand Allfrey was the only female minister. She was also a teacher at Wesley High School.
Phyllis Shand Allfrey is most noted for her book “The Orchid House” published in 1953. Since then the Orchid House has been modified having various versions as well as a movie that was released in 1991. In our Imagined Homeland project, we use geographical mapping to guide the contextual analysis of the novel as it related directly to Dominica’s evolving socio-political environment. The map adds a layer of reality. Making connections to the novel, the ‘setting’ becomes a real place where real people lived and had similar experiences.
