In March 2026, Create Caribbean partnered with Whose Knowledge and Noircir Wikipedia to host "Hidden Caribbean Figures", a two-day hybrid Wikipedia editing event at UWI's Mona Campus. About 20 participants — including students, librarians, and researchers from across the region — worked to close the Caribbean's content gap on Wikipedia, drawing on Create Caribbean's Visualizing Caribbean Literature database of more than 3,000 literary works. The event produced new biographies for authors like Alick Lazare and Celeste Mohammed, along with over 50 improved entries on Caribbean literary figures — proof that when local knowledge leads, the whole world gets a fuller picture of Caribbean culture.

Haitian Summer Institute

The LACC Haitian Summer Institute is a dynamic six-week, in-person program at FIU’s Modesto Maidique Campus. It is designed for individuals interested in building or advancing their Haitian Creole language skills—from beginner to advanced levels.

Through intensive, track-based instruction, participants can progress from beginner to intermediate or from intermediate to advanced proficiency. In addition to language training, the program features lectures and cultural programming led by nationally recognized Haitian artists, scholars, and diasporic leaders, offering a rich exploration of Haitian history and culture.

Program highlights include:

• Classes held Monday through Friday, with morning and afternoon sessions

• In-person instruction at FIU

• A six-week immersive learning experience

The Caribbean People Podcast is part of a larger oral history project and is produced by Create Caribbean Research Institute.

The first episode, “In Search of Tainos”, delves into the story of the Tainos. Though they were commonly thought to have been eradicated for centuries, the Taino people are forming communities within Jamaica as some groups trace their lineage to the indigenous tribe. The producers share the story of one such exploration of ancestry.

We extend our thanks to our Create Caribbean community around the world for your thoughts and support in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa. While we are happy to report that the people and spaces of CCRI in Jamaica are safe with little physical and material impact from the storm, we will need some time to rest, reflect and recalibrate.

In that spirit, we will be postponing the Hidden Caribbean Figures edit event, scheduled for November 7-8, until further notice. A new date will be announced once we have completed our review and rescheduling process.

Hurricane Melissa reminds us: with climate crisis and disaster always looming in our Caribbean, it is imperative that we continue the work of preserving, protecting and restoring our Caribbean heritage with vigilance and foresight. We will be back very soon, working on our projects that hold this tenet at the core. Thanks for your understanding and we look forward to sharing this event with you very soon.

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal invites submissions on digital humanities and Caribbean literature.

This special issue of Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal seeks articles, interviews, and digital project reviews on the critical use of digital humanities methodologies to deepen the study of Caribbean literary works.

Scholars in Caribbean literary studies have increasingly used digital tools for developing new approaches to archiving and analyzing Caribbean texts in response to challenges such as ephemerality, natural disasters, publishing barriers, accessibility issues, and colonial epistemologies. This special issue of Anthurium, the first born-digital Caribbean studies journal, aims to highlight the increasing importance of digital technologies in preserving access to Caribbean literary and historical materials. It also raises critical questions on how scholars leverage digital tools to engage with literary forms that extend beyond print, reshaping how we approach Caribbean storytelling.
